There is a strong link between tartan and military regiments in Scotland and also further a field. The Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment) is probably the most famous Scottish Regiment in the British army. The regiment's name allegedly came from the dark tartan that they wore and their role to 'watch' the Highlands. The Back Watch tartan is a 'free' tartan, meaning it can be worn by anyone.
