The "Golden Age of comic books" is said to be the 1930s and 1940s. As the world faced the Great Depression and world wars, the American public needed more than just political satire or "Little Orphan Annie" cartoons; they needed a hero. DC Comics had been around since the 1920s but saw little success, since no one wanted to take a gamble on a comic book series featuring unknown artists and characters.
