Although mostly known for his aphorism "I think, therefore I am," Rene Descartes was a famous mathematician of the 17th century. Descartes served as a soldier until he was 25 but even then he never stopped working on mathematical problems in between campaigns and battles. When he died he left behind important works in analytical geometry.
